Notes from the Testing Journey

Thinking about software quality.

Practical lessons, testing approaches and reflections on finding defects, understanding application behaviour and building better software.

Testing Fundamentals

Beyond the Happy Path: Why Negative Testing Matters

Good testing is not only about checking whether a feature works with valid input. It is also about exploring what happens when users make mistakes, provide unexpected data or follow an unusual sequence.

Negative testing helps reveal weaknesses in validation, error handling and application behaviour that may not appear during a standard successful workflow.

Key takeaway: Ask not only “Does it work?” but also “How does it fail?”

API Testing

An API Response Can Be Successful and Still Be Wrong

An HTTP success status does not automatically mean that an API behaves correctly. The response body, data types, business rules, error handling and resulting database changes may still need validation.

Checking both the response and its effects helps uncover problems that status-code checks alone can miss.

Key takeaway: Validate the meaning of a response, not just its status code.

Test Design

Turning Requirements into Meaningful Test Scenarios

Requirements describe what a system should do. Test scenarios help explore whether it actually meets those expectations across normal, boundary and unexpected situations.

Considering user actions, data variations and possible failure conditions makes test coverage more useful than simply counting test cases.

Key takeaway: Strong test design starts with understanding the requirement and the risks behind it.
